Playwrights Guild of Canada (PGC) is a member service organization that advocates, protects, and promotes Canadian playwrights. If the playwright you are looking for is a member of the guild, you can most likely find information on performance rights for their work. If you commission a PGC member, you can guarantee that the playwright will know their own rates and be able to navigate their own contracts.
The PGC works to “promote and protect” the work of playwrights in Canada with over 850 current members. They also provide resources for the public to access the work of playwrights.
Here is a list of some ways the PGC can help you:
- The PGC can help you with contracting a playwright in organizing the use of rights and/or commissions.
- They offer playwrights skill building workshops; professional development opportunities; a yearly conference for networking and artistic exchange.
- The Canadian Play Outlet showcases more than 2,000 plays that you can browse and order online.
- Each year they host the Tom Hendry Awards which is an evening that celebrates the work of playwrights on all levels. Any active member can apply to have their play considered.
- They also have a series of newsletters so you can stay up to date on all the going’s on of their members. They have their monthly CanScene letter for members that provides all upcoming opportunities & their Women’s Caucus Newsletter which highlights all current resources for women playwrights.
